A very talented and close friend of mine in college (with whom I am sadly no longer on speaking terms) was hugely influenced by Rauschenberg. Even if you don't like or don't get his work, it is hard to overstate his impact on modern art.

One of my all-time favorites

He and Jasper Johns were the bridge between abstract expressionism (DeKooning & Hoffman) and pop art (Warhol & Rivers).

His impact on 20th century art cannot be overstated and if you follow the eclectic nature of postmodern art you can easily see his influence there as well.
